Itinerary:
Camp Beach »  Aso town »  Mount Aso »  Camp Site

Up pretty early to see a quite impressive sunrise. Tents dry very quickly with the breeze off the sea. Drove down south missing the curiously named city of Saga. Mid-afternoon entered the world's largest caldera with a diameter of some 25km. Words cannot really describe the stunning scenes of Mt Aso. Neither can words describe the complete lack of help afforded us at the tourist information office at the station. In response to my request for info about campsites we were simply told that it was impossible to camp here at this time of year. Yeah right! Found supposed toll road across the peak of Mt. Aso was in fact now free! The drive across has to be one of the best road trips in the world. The views were incredible. But we vowed to come back tomorrow as we headed on to find a campsite marked on our atlas. Found it - turned out to be a venue for rock concerts. Staff so helpful. Four of them worked the phones to get us a place to stay and found a campsite willing to let us camp nearby. On arrival turned out to be a bit expensive. I complained - got a discount. Wow! Ethnic meal of couscous and kimchi followed by Stephen and Dad's first experience of an onsen. Sheena's experience not so good. Left her earrings in the changing room. Went back to find they had been removed by someone who now has a very nice set of amber earrings. Nice quiet campsite - when the dogs finally shut up!
